IMD Predicts Snowfall with Thunderstorm & Lightning in Himalayan Areas till Jan 26, Delhi to Witness Light Rain

Snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are likely to continue for a few days, the IMD said. The weather agency has also predicted rainfall in the northern parts of the country.

On January 21, the Indian Meterological Department (IMD) predicted that there would not be a cold wave over the nation till January 24. They also stated that till January 26, a strong western disturbance is anticipated to have an impact on northwest India and the western Himalayan area.

Weather Forecast for the Next Five Days

In middle tropospheric levels, the Western Disturbance causes cyclonic circulation across north Pakistan and adjacent Jammu & Kashmir, as well as over southwest Rajasthan.

Snowfall would continue in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand due to the active western disturbance. The meteorological service further predicted that from January 24 to January 27 there would likely be mild to moderate rainfall throughout Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi.

IMD stated, “Under the influence of Western Disturbance, light/moderate scattered to widespread rainfall/snowfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during 21st to 27th with its peak intensity during 24th to 26th January 2023, isolated heavy rainfall/snowfall over above areas is also likely during the same period."

In its five-day prediction, the Regional Meteorological Department of Delhi called for cloudy skies, light rain, and brisk winds. According to the MeT, the lowest and maximum temperatures in the nation's capital are predicted to be about 11 and 22 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Weather Outlook for 26th-28th January 2023

  • Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall is predicted throughout the plains of Northwest India, as well as scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall over the Western Himalayan Region.

  • Isolated to scattered light rainfall is predicted throughout sections of central and southern India, as well as the islands.

  • The rest of the country is likely to see dry weather.

Thunderstorms & Lightning Likely Over These Regions

From January 23 to January 25, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning & hail are predicted at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, and with lightning at isolated places over Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh.
