Weather Forecast: The current period of severe to extremely heavy rainfall across Odisha and Chhattisgarh is very likely to continue today, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Odisha has been receiving severe rains since past few days. Bhubaneswar broke a 63-year-old record after receiving 195 mm rainfall in 24 hours.
Puri, another prominent city, also set a new record with 341 mm of rain in a single day, breaking an 87-year-old record. Officials informed PTI that on September 2, 1934, the coastal city received 210.8 mm of rain.
The IMD reported today that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to persist over Gujarat till the 16th of September, and over Madhya Pradesh on the 14th and 15th of September.
According to IMD, moderately widespread to widespread rainfall is anticipated across Odisha and Chhattisgarh on Monday (13 September), with isolated heavy to very heavy falls. Isolated extremely heavy rains are likely over these areas on Monday (13 September), with reduction thereafter.
During the next 3-4 days, broad to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rains is quite possible across north Konkan, north Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat, East Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
“Isolated heavy to very heavy falls are anticipated over north Konkan (Palghar) on September 13th; across Gujarat state on September 13th & 15th; and over West Madhya Pradesh on September 15th," the department said.
Rainfall will be scattered throughout Peninsular India for the next 5 days.
Over the next two days, heavy rain is expected across coastal and south interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Kerala. “On the 13th of September, isolated very heavy rains are anticipated over Coastal Karnataka. Increased rainfall in areas of northwest India plains, with a new stretch of heavy rain in isolated spots across Haryana, Rajasthan and west Uttar Pradesh from September 16th “ according to the IMD.
The weather office issued advisories for 13 districts as a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal developed into a severe depression and crossed the coast near Chandbali in Bhadrak district this morning.
Over the next 48 hours, the system is expected to move west-northwest through north Odisha, north Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh.
In Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Sonepur, and Bargarh, the department has issued a 'Red' alert, anticipating severe to extremely heavy rainfall.
Puri received 341 mm of rain in the past 24 hours, followed by Paradip (219 mm), Gopalpur (64 mm), Chandbali (46 mm), and Balasore (46 mm) (24 mm).
The Central Water Commission (CWC) has also issued an alert for many districts, citing the swelling of major rivers and their tributaries as a result of the incessant rain.
"In districts like Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Kendrapara, Dhenkanal, and Jajpur, water levels of the Brahmani river and its tributaries are predicted to rise. Baitarani is anticipated to grow in Keonjhar and Bhadrak districts "According to the CWC.
It is also expected that the Mahanadi and its tributaries would continue to rise in Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, and Bolangir.
According to the CWC alert, floods are expected in Odisha since the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast exceptionally heavy rains. In Balasore, the Jalka river is flowing above the danger level, it said.
