According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), strong southwest monsoon conditions are predicted to continue across coastal Maharashtra and the whole west coast, resulting in very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the course of the next five days.

Rainfall Predictions this week

Over the next days, rainfall will also increase in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh.

This season was the first time that rainfall in Maharashtra was considered "normal." The state has received 227.9 mm of rain since June 1. Statistics show that this is 12% below the state's seasonal normal until July 5, however the IMD considers this deficit as normal rainfall.

Over the central district of Madhya Pradesh, there is a low-pressure area. Finally, there are strong westerly winds coming from the Arabian Sea through to Maharashtra.

These winds are caused by an off-shore trough that runs between Gujarat and Maharashtra, the monsoon trough, which is now running below its typical location.

According to the most recent weather predictions from IMD, Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra will stay on 'red' alert (take action) through July 8.

The Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra regions are on 'red' alert until Friday, while the 'orange' warning is in effect for Saturday, according to the IMD. On Wednesday, "orange" alerts are also in effect for Goa, coastal Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

The states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, and Odisha has received a warning for July 9.
