Weather Report: Assam government issued a notification ordering the closure of all educational institutions in Guwahati due to an IMD red alert warning for heavy rainfall. Guwahati has received 81.5 mm of rain in the last 24 hours, which falls into the 'heavy rain' category.
According to the official notification, "in view of the weather forecast issued by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) regarding incessant rainfall in Kamrup Metropolitan District for tomorrow i.e. 15/06/2022, it is hereby advised to all educational institutions (both Govt. and Private) to be closed down for tomorrow with the exception of the conduct of examinations which have already been scheduled."
Red Alert Issued for Assam & Meghalaya
The RMC has issued a 'Red Alert' for Assam and Meghalaya, warning of isolated and scattered "extremely heavy rainfall" from Tuesday to Thursday, and a 'Orange Alert' for Friday and Saturday.
With the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati forecasting "extremely heavy rainfall" over the next few days, the situation is expected to worsen and more people are expected to flock to relief camps.
ASDMA reported landslides in at least 19 locations throughout the city, including Kamakhya, Kharghuli, Hengerabari, Silpukhuri, Uzan Bazar, Gandhi Basti, and Chandmari Colony, but there were no casualties.
Continuous rain since Monday night has wreaked havoc in Guwahati, causing knee-deep water logging on all major and minor roads, with water reaching the chest level in some places. The entrance and approach road to the Guwahati railway station were completely submerged, causing inconvenience to passengers.
Hundreds of vehicles, including school buses, were stranded on the roads after their engines failed in the floodwaters, which had also infiltrated hundreds of homes in the city. Many areas reported massive traffic jams, with vehicles stranded for several hours.
Flooding has been reported on Zoo Road, RG Baruah Road, GS Road, Nabin Nagar, Anil Nagar, Hatigaon, Ganeshguri, Hedayetpur, MLA quarters in Dispur, Lachit Nagar, Tarun Nagar, Jyotikuchi, Ghoramara, VIP Road, Rajgarh Road, Jorabat, and Chatribari, among other roads.
According to the weather report, moisture incursion is very likely to continue from June 14 to 18 due to strong lower-level winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India. "Under its influence, widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning/heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations is very likely to continue over Northeastern states from June 14-18, 2022," RMC said.
