Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted a rainy period across east and neighboring central India for the next two days, followed by a significant decrease, and dense to extremely dense fog over North India for the following 4-5 days on Thursday. On January 16 and 17, the northwest Himalayas will be affected by a Western Disturbance (WD), and northwest India will be affected by another WD from January 18 to 20.

Rainfall likely in these regions

There is a Western Disturbance visible as an upper tropospheric trough, and another trough visible at lower tropospheric levels that spans from north interior Karnataka to north interior Odisha. In the lower troposphere, there is a cyclonic circulation over the south Konkan. Isolated light rain/snowfall is extremely likely across higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on Friday due to the impact of the aforementioned systems.

The IMD predicts widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall across Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim, Telangana, and coastal Andhra Pradesh on Friday, with isolated to scattered light/moderate rains over Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh. Isolated rain is expected in Arunachal Pradesh on January 14 and 15, with very probable rain in Assam,  Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Nagaland,  and Tripura till January 15.

No significant change in Minimum temperature

Meanwhile, no significant change in minimum temperatures is highly expected across northwestern and central India over the next 4-5 days, no major change in minimum temperatures throughout Gujarat over the next 2 days, and a steady incline of 2-4 degrees Celsius thereafter. Likewise, minimum temperatures in east India are projected to remain unchanged for the next three days before dropping by 2-3 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD report.

Cold waves and dense Fog likely over these states

During the next 3 days, isolated cold wave conditions are very possible over northeast Rajasthan, west Uttar Pradesh, and West Madhya Pradesh, while cold day conditions are very probable across Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh,  and north Rajasthan.

The India Meteorological Department(IMD) also has anticipated dense/very dense fog in isolated areas in the night/morning hours over  Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim over the next five days, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and north Rajasthan over the next three days, and the Western Himalayan region, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura over the next two days.
