Weather Update: the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts rainfall and thunderstorms throughout large swaths of east and central India. Cold wave conditions are expected to prevail in parts of northwestern India beginning today, according to the weather forecasting agency.
According to an IMD advisory issued on Monday night, dense or extremely dense fog is expected to be observed in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and north Rajasthan during the next few days. "Cold wave conditions in isolated pockets are very likely across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh during 12th-15th of January 2022, and over north Rajasthan during the 11th-13th of January 2022," the IMD predicts.
The weather forecast predicts isolated heavy rainfall over Odisha on January 11 and January 13. During the 10th to 14th of January, scattered to fairly widespread light or moderate rainfall is very likely throughout Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Odisha.
Heavy rainfall is expected to persist over Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh for the next two days before diminishing.
This week, isolated thunderstorms with lightning or hail are expected throughout Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Marathawada, Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal, Sikkim, and Odisha. Over the next three days, scattered rainfall or snowfall is also expected in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura in northeastern India.
"Under the influence of cyclonic circulation over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and its surroundings at lower and mid-tropospheric levels, isolated light rainfall or thundershower across Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe during the next 4-5 days," the IMD added.
The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the centre parts of the south Bay of Bengal and neighboring Southwest Bay of Bengal due to squally weather (wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph).
