The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that a cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal on May 6. This may intensify into a cyclonic storm after May 8.

A low-pressure area will form over the southeast Bay of Bengal on May 7 under the influence of cyclonic circulation. The IMD statement on Wednesday predicted that this is likely to develop into a depression on May 8. The system is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm, moving northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal.

The IMD is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates on its path and intensity as more information becomes available. The official weather forecaster has also reported that a cyclonic circulation lies over north Tamil Nadu at lower tropospheric levels, while another such circulation lies over south Chhattisgarh at lower tropospheric levels.

Meanwhile, a fresh western disturbance is expected to affect north-western India from May 7, according to the IMD. In its forecast and warning, the weather forecaster said that light to moderate, fairly widespread thunderstorms, lightning, or gusty winds are likely over north-western parts in the next 24 hours.

On May 5, there will be a fresh spell of isolated to scattered rainfall over the plains of northwest India for the subsequent 2-3 days. In central India, light isolated or scattered rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, or gusty winds is expected over the next 5 days. Southern India will also face similar weather events during the period, while in the northeast, there could be light and moderate widespread rainfall over the next three days.

In its agromet advisories, the IMD has advised farmers in Tamil Nadu to postpone the harvest of green gram (moong) and black gram (black matpe or urad). It has also recommended delaying the harvest of wheat in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

The IMD has suggested completing the harvest of matured rice in Kerala and interior Karnataka during clear weather. It has also recommended continuing the harvest of matured onions and fruits such as watermelon and muskmelon in Vidarbha during clear weather.

The IMD's regular monitoring of weather patterns and provision of agromet advisories are essential for farmers to make informed decisions about crop management. People in affected areas need to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to stay safe during extreme weather events.
