The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has created a scholarship programme for economically weaker (EWS) BTech students in partnership with the Power Grid Corporation of India.
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, the company would give Rs 10.5 crore to establish a scholarship fund. "This fund will help deserving students at IIT Madras by providing merit-based scholarships to pay their tuition costs. In the fiscal year 2021-22, this is the largest single commitment to IIT Madras for scholarships under CSR "the press statement stated.
Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT Madras, and V.K. Singh, Director (Personnel), Powergrid Corporation of India, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for this CSR-driven project on Saturday, May 7 in the presence of IIT Madras Director, Prof. V. Kamakoti.
The 'Power Grid Endowment Scholarship' fund was established to grant merit-based scholarships to B.Tech students from low - income backgrounds.
"Every year, many deserving students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds attend IIT Madras. The Power Grid Endowment Scholarship would enable these talented young people to continue their study without financial restrictions "it stated. Women from low-income households will be given priority in the scholarship programme.
"IIT Madras' mission is to be a 'Institute for everyone,'" V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, addressed during the event. IIT Madras has become more accessible to everybody through initiatives like as the BSc degree programme and scholarships for eligible students. The institution expresses its heartfelt gratitude to POWERGRID. IIT Madras also intends to provide such scholarships to all technical colleges in the country."
In the presence of Kamakoti, IIT-Madras Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations) professor Mahesh Panchagnula exchanged documents with Power Grid Corporation of India Director (Personnel) V K Singh.
