In Dhankutti Village, Barabanki District, an outreach workshop and input distribution program for the construction of Cluster Ponds and the distribution of ornamental fish were recently held. This initiative, under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan Project, was organized in collaboration with AquaWorld and ICAR-National Bureau Fish Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBFGR), Lucknow. The project aims to empower women from the Scheduled Caste community by providing them with sustainable income opportunities through microenterprises.
The workshop was designed to build basic capacity among the participating women, equipping them with essential knowledge and skills. The event served as a platform for the women to voice their challenges and receive immediate solutions, ensuring smooth progress in their new ventures. A preliminary survey of the village was conducted to identify suitable locations for pond construction and to select the beneficiaries.
ICAR-NBFGR and AquaWorld engaged with 50 women from four villages: Rehramau, Basant Nagar, Gaurva Gauri, and Chandrawa. The participants received mentorship and training on market connectivity, helping them understand the process of selling their fish effectively. During the event, ornamental fish were distributed to the women for rearing, and support was provided for constructing earthen ponds in their homes. Additionally, some women opted to build cemented ponds.
The program included visits to the homes of women who had constructed cement ponds. The team observed successful breeding of ornamental fish, with pairs of livebearer ornamental fishes provided by the program thriving and ready for sale. This demonstrated the project's tangible impact, as the women were able to breed and prepare the fish for the market through AquaWorld. This initiative marks a significant step towards creating sustainable income sources for Scheduled Caste women.
By providing training, resources, and ongoing support, the project not only empowers these women but also contributes to the economic development of their communities.
