ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), situated in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, commemorated World Milk Day on June 1, 2024, showcasing the pivotal role of milk as a crucial global food source.
This annual event, initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, serves to raise awareness regarding the nutritional value, accessibility, and affordability of milk while highlighting its substantial contribution to nourishing populations worldwide.
Themed 'Celebrating the Vital Role Dairy Plays in Delivering Quality Nutrition to Nourish the World,' this year's World Milk Day festivities at ICAR-KVK, WGH accentuated the essential minerals and nutrients present in milk, such as calcium, vitamin D, potassium, magnesium, and folates.
Recognized as a nutritious drink due to its high potassium and magnesium content, milk consumption is associated with strengthened bones and reduced risks of heart disease. Notably, a 250 mL glass of milk provides 48% of a child's daily protein requirement and 9% of their caloric intake.
The event witnessed active participation, with a total of 46 attendees coming together to celebrate the significance of milk in promoting food security, nutrition, economic stability, and human development.
