ICAR-CMFRI Appoints Dr Grinson George as Director

ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has appointed Dr Grinson George, a seasoned fisheries researcher with more than 20 years of expertise, as Director.

Dr. Grinson George has assumed the role of Director at the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). With a distinguished career spanning over two decades, Dr. George is a seasoned fishery researcher and was previously leading the Marine Biodiversity and Environment Management Division at CMFRI. His extensive experience and expertise in fishery resource management, marine biodiversity, environment management, fisheries oceanography, remote sensing, and climate change are expected to steer CMFRI towards new heights in marine research and sustainable fisheries management.  

Before taking on this prestigious role at CMFRI, Dr. George also held the position of Senior Programme Specialist at the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in Dhaka, where he contributed significantly to regional cooperation in fisheries and marine biodiversity.

Dr. George's illustrious career includes leading numerous high-impact research projects at both national and international levels. He has been the principal investigator for projects funded by prominent agencies such as the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, ISRO, Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science and Technology, ICAR-National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA), and India-UK Water Quality Initiatives. His research endeavors have greatly contributed to the advancement of knowledge in marine sciences and the development of sustainable practices in fisheries.

In addition to his research contributions, Dr. George has been actively involved in academia. He has served as a member of the Board of Studies at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS). Furthermore, he has guided numerous PhD scholars across various universities, including CUSAT, KUFOS, Andhra University, and Mangalore University, fostering the next generation of marine scientists.

Dr. Grinson George hails from Chalakkudi in Thrissur district, Kerala. His appointment as the Director of CMFRI is expected to bring fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to marine fisheries research and management in India.
