Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi led a comprehensive review meeting at the ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) in Kausalyaganga yesterday. The meeting's primary focus was to assess the progress and accomplishments of both ICAR-CIFA and NFDB-National Fresh Water Fish Brood Bank (NFFBB), Bhubaneswar, in their joint efforts to advance the field of freshwater aquaculture.
At the meeting, Dr. Pramoda Kumar Sahoo, the Director of ICAR-CIFA, highlighted several notable achievements that the institutions have made over the years. These include the development of genetically improved Rohu and Catla fish varieties, GI-Scampi species, advancements in species and system diversification, innovative aquaculture technologies, feed formulations tailored for various freshwater fish species, diagnostics and treatments for fish diseases, and cutting-edge research initiatives.
Dr. Sahoo emphasized that these accomplishments have not only contributed to the aquaculture sector's growth but have also significantly enhanced the skills of farmers and other stakeholders. Dr. Likhi underlined the importance of CIFA's continued dedication to need-based research that directly benefits aqua farmers. He particularly stressed the urgency of focusing on diseases that have been affecting the industry.
On the other hand, representatives from NFDB-NFFBB provided an in-depth overview of the Brood Bank's objectives, achievements to date, and ongoing projects. They highlighted the establishment of a multiplication center for breeding and producing breeder seeds of genetically improved fish strains, as well as modern nursery facilities for GI Scampi. Additionally, their efforts in training and capacity building for fish breeding and seed production were acknowledged as crucial for enhancing the skills of fish farmers.
In response to these discussions, Dr. Likhi advised NFDB-NFFBB to prioritize the development of commercially important fish varieties that are in demand for biofloc and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). The meeting also featured a presentation by the Director of Fisheries for the Government of Odisha, who showcased the remarkable progress achieved in the state's fisheries and aquaculture sector. Notable areas of growth included increased fish production, rising exports, and growing domestic consumption.
Engaging with a diverse audience including exporters, progressive farmers, Women Self Help Group (WSHG) members, and Fish Farmer Producer Organization (FFPO) members, Dr. Likhi sought to understand the sector's priorities and expectations from both the government and research institutions. He emphasized the importance of creating mass awareness among farmers through various channels, such as electronic and print media, social media, Kisan Melas, seminars, advisories, and publications.
During his visit to ICAR-CIFA facilities, Dr. Likhi toured the Biofloc unit, the GI-Scampi complex, the ornamental fish complex, and the air-breathing fish unit. He also observed the Multiplication facility and the Scampi nursery rearing facility at NFFBB, where he witnessed firsthand the genetically improved fish species developed.
