On Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for seven districts in Kerala, predicting heavy rainfall in the state's central and southern regions. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki districts have been warned.
A yellow alert was also issued on Saturday for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Idukki due to the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall in these districts.
Meanwhile, the IMD has rescinded its warning that the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal could worsen into a depression.
From April 1 to Thursday, the state received 48% more rain than usual. The majority of the districts received above-average rainfall. Pathanamthitta has received 20cm of rain so far, which is 99 percent of normal. Pathanamthitta also had the most rain on Thursday.
The highest rainfall of 90mm (9cm) was recorded near Ayiroor in Pathanamthitta at Kurudamannil. Ernakulam south received 8cm of rain, while Kottayam and Munnar received 6cm each. Except for the districts of Kasaragod and Thiruvananthapuram, most of the state received rain.
In addition, the daytime temperature in most areas, including Kottayam, has dropped. The highest maximum temperature recorded was 37 degrees Celsius in Palakkad. However, experts warn against going out in the sun in the afternoon.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the Kerala coast on Friday due to adverse weather conditions.
The IMD warns of "strong winds 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph very likely along and off Kerala coast." The IMD stated that there are no restrictions on venturing into the sea off the coasts of Karnataka and Lakshadweep.
Assam, Meghalaya on Orange Alert
Strong and moist southwesterly winds continue to blow in from the Bay of Bengal and onto the northeastern states, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Over the next five days, fairly widespread to widespread rains, accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms, are expected in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya. At the same time, isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to hit Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
In addition, isolated heavy rain may fall in Arunachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim from Friday to Sunday, April 8-10, and in Assam-Meghalaya until next Tuesday, April 12. Between Saturday and Monday, April 9-11, isolated locations in the latter two states may experience very heavy downpours.
