Heavy Rain Alert Issued Across India From Delhi, Himachal, Uttarakhand to Punjab

The national capital of India, New Delhi, experienced unprecedented rainfall on Sunday, July 9 resulting in severe waterlogging and disruption in various areas. According to the weather department, there are further predictions of heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Delhi, and the surrounding areas in the coming days.

While the Yellow alert has been issued in Delhi, the diplomatic enclave in Chanakyapuri, which houses foreign missions, as well as other areas accommodating VIPs, were among the affected regions. This deluge shattered a 41-year rainfall record, leaving the city grappling with the aftermath.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), in the span of 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Sunday, Delhi recorded a staggering 153 mm of rainfall. This marked the highest single-day rainfall in July since 1982, further emphasizing the extraordinary nature of the downpour. Reports emerged of house collapses and extensive waterlogging in numerous residential colonies.

Additionally, prominent areas like Chanakyapuri, Kaka Nagar, Bharti Nagar, and several roads and colonies under the jurisdiction of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) faced significant waterlogging issues, including the diplomatic enclaves.

Due to heavy rainfall causing waterlogging, all schools in Gurgaon and Delhi have been closed today. And, the Gurgaon administration has also recommended that corporate houses allow their employees to work from home to prevent traffic congestion.

Furthermore, the recent heavy rainfall in several parts of northern India has severely affected the region, resulting in the loss of at least 19 lives in the past three days. Numerous roads and buildings in cities and towns remain submerged in water, with the water level reaching knee-deep.

According to the weather department, there are further predictions of heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Delhi, and the surrounding areas in the coming days.

People from Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Delhi have been sharing alarming visuals online, depicting the chaos caused by the floods, including vehicles floating like paper boats, muddy waters inundating residential areas, structures submerged along riverbanks, and land cave-ins.

In addition to this, landslides and flash floods were reported in neighbouring Uttarakhand too, with reports of water levels in rivers and streams crossing the danger mark.

The unprecedented rainfall and subsequent waterlogging in New Delhi, Himachal and Punjab have presented significant challenges for residents, authorities, and essential services. Efforts are being made to mitigate the impact and restore normalcy as swiftly as possible.
