Guru Purnima is one of the most respected festivals in India. It is a special day dedicated to showing respect and gratitude to teachers, mentors, spiritual masters and guides. The word Guru in Sanskrit means “one who removes darkness” (Gu means darkness and Ru means remover). So, a guru is someone who shows the right path and helps us grow in knowledge and wisdom.

When is Guru Purnima 2025?

In 2025, Guru Purnima will be celebrated on Thursday, 10 July. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, it falls on the full moon day (Purnima) in the month of Ashadha, which usually comes in June or July every year.

For 2025, the Purnima Tithi (full moon period) will begin at 1:36 AM on 10 July and end at 2:06 AM on 11 July. Many devotees wake up before sunrise to perform rituals and prayers during the early hours, which are considered highly auspicious.

Historical Background and Spiritual Meaning

Guru Purnima is celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains with deep faith. It has great spiritual and cultural importance:

  • Veda Vyasa Jayanti: In Hindu tradition, this day marks the birth anniversary of Maharishi Veda Vyasa. He is one of the greatest sages and scholars in Indian history. He divided the Vedas into four parts, wrote the Mahabharata, and compiled the eighteen Puranas. Because of his huge contribution to preserving knowledge, he is called the Adi Guru (first guru), and Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima.

  • Buddhist Significance: In Buddhism, Guru Purnima is the day when Lord Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath to his five disciples after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. His first teaching, known as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, laid the foundation for the spread of Buddhism.

  • Jain Tradition: In Jainism, Guru Purnima is linked with Lord Mahavira. It is believed that on this day, Lord Mahavira made his chief disciple, Gautam Swami, accept his spiritual teachings and follow his path as a monk.

Importance of a Guru in Life

In Indian culture, the guru holds a very high position: even higher than parents and God, according to many ancient texts. A guru is not only a teacher of books but also a guide in life. They help remove ignorance, guide the disciple towards good conduct, spiritual awakening, and self-realisation.

The bond between a guru and disciple (guru-shishya parampara) is one of trust, respect, and learning. This tradition has been kept alive for thousands of years and is still followed in ashrams, spiritual centres and families.

Common Rituals and Practices

People celebrate Guru Purnima in many ways, but the purpose is the same, to honour the guru and seek blessings. Here are some common customs:

  • Cleaning and Decoration: Many people clean their homes and prayer rooms. Some decorate the house entrance with flowers and rangoli.

  • Special Puja: Devotees take a bath early in the morning, wear clean clothes, and perform a special guru puja to worship their teacher or guru. They may offer flowers, garlands, fruits, sweets, and gifts.

  • Visiting Ashrams and Temples: Many people visit temples, monasteries, or their guru’s ashram to attend special gatherings or satsangs (spiritual discourses). Disciples listen to teachings and stories of saints and sages.

  • Observing Fast: Some devotees keep a partial or full-day fast as a mark of respect and to purify the mind.

  • Charity and Service: People donate food, clothes or money to the needy, schools, or spiritual centres. Helping others is also considered an act of honouring the guru’s teachings.

Guru Purnima in Schools and Modern Life

Today, Guru Purnima is celebrated in schools, colleges and universities across India. Students organise special events to thank their teachers for their guidance. Many educational institutions conduct cultural programmes, speeches, and award ceremonies on this day.

In a broader sense, the festival reminds us that learning is a lifelong process and everyone who guides us,  parents, teachers, mentors, or spiritual leaders, should be respected.
