Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday (October 6, 2025) intervened after reports emerged of widespread damage to pomegranate crops in Rajasthan’s Balotra and nearby areas. The damage, believed to be caused by a sudden outbreak of diseases including the ‘Tikri’ infection, has raised concern among farmers in the area.
Taking swift action, Chouhan has directed the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to launch an immediate investigation into the matter. A special team of scientists will visit the affected regions to conduct an in-depth field assessment, identify the causes of the disease outbreak, and review existing crop management practices. The team will also recommend effective measures to curb the spread and prevent future occurrences.
Union Minister said that the government will prepare a comprehensive action plan based on the team’s findings. This plan will focus on disease control, pruning techniques, judicious use of fertilisers and pesticides, and promotion of improved horticultural practices to revive pomegranate cultivation in the region.
To support farmers on the ground, experts from ICAR’s Central Institute for Arid Horticulture (Bikaner), National Research Centre on Pomegranate (Solapur), and Central Arid Zone Research Institute (Jodhpur) will work closely with local agricultural universities and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs). They will guide farmers on managing diseases, restoring plant health, and improving fruit quality through scientific interventions.
Chouhan emphasised that the challenge can only be addressed through a coordinated approach involving central and state departments, research institutes, and extension agencies.
Agriculture Minister also assured that affected farmers would receive full technical support and training, adding that the government remains committed to improving productivity and safeguarding farmer incomes through timely and science-based action.
