The Government of India, through the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), has issued a call for proposals (CfP) inviting institutions to set up Centres of Excellence (CoE) dedicated to Green Hydrogen under its Research and Development (R&D) Scheme. This initiative, launched as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aims to drive innovation, strengthen sustainable energy practices, and advance India’s journey toward energy self-sufficiency.
The CoEs will play a crucial role in the country's green energy transformation, acting as hubs for cutting-edge research, skill development, and knowledge sharing. These centres are expected to accelerate advancements in Green Hydrogen production, storage, and utilization technologies, crucial for a low-carbon future. "This initiative will bring academia, industry, and government bodies together, creating a collaborative ecosystem to fuel breakthroughs in Green Hydrogen and boost India's competitiveness in clean energy," stated an MNRE official.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission, with an ambitious budget of Rs 19,744 crores allocated up to the financial year 2029-30, was first launched on January 4, 2023. The mission highlights India’s vision of achieving Aatma Nirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in clean energy. The establishment of CoEs aligns with the mission's goals, contributing to reduced dependence on fossil fuel imports and furthering India’s global standing in Green Hydrogen technology.
The R&D Scheme's guidelines, issued earlier in March 2024, outline the criteria for these CoEs. It encourages partnerships among public and private sector players, research institutions, and universities. The government has allocated Rs 100 crores specifically for setting up these centers.
