
Union Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan will inaugurate the National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations (NAKSHA) in 152 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across 26 states and 3 Union Territories at Raisen, Madhya Pradesh, tomorrow on February 18, 2025. The Department of Land Resources, Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, has launched this ambitious pilot project to modernize urban land record management.
NAKSHA aims to create and update accurate land records in urban areas, ensuring reliable documentation of land ownership. This program is designed to empower citizens by promoting transparency and efficiency, reducing land-related disputes, and improving urban planning. The initiative supports sustainable development and enhances the ease of living by making property records more accessible and accurate.
The program’s technical partner, the Survey of India, will conduct aerial surveys and provide orthorectified imagery to assist in the development of these land records. This imagery will be utilized by state and UT governments to conduct field surveys and ground truthing, ultimately culminating in the publication of updated land records.
Madhya Pradesh State Electronic Development Corporation (MPSEDC) will develop the end-to-end web-GIS platform, with storage facilities provided by the National Informatics Centre Services Inc. (NICSI).
The launch event will feature the flying of drones, the release of a Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) booklet, and the screening of various informational materials. The program is fully funded by the Government of India, with a projected cost of Rs 194 crore.
Through NAKSHA, the government aims to bring about significant advancements in urban land record management, benefitting citizens and local governments alike.
Key figures attending the event will include Union Minister of State for Rural Development & Communications Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, and various other state and national officials.
