About Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)

The Greater Bangalore Metropolitan Area's civic facilities and some infrastructural resources are managed by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the fourth-largest Municipal Corporation in India, which is also accountable for a population of 8.4 million spread across an area of 741 km2. Over the past six decades, its boundaries have expanded more than 10 times.

The "orderly development of the city" — zoning and building regulations, health, sanitation, licensing, trade, and education, as well as the quality-of-life issues like public open space, water bodies, parks, and greenery — is one of its functions and responsibilities.

The BBMP represents the third level of government, and the first two levels are the Central Government and State Government. BBMP is run by a city council composed of elected representatives, called "corporators", one from each of the wards of the city.
