Alphonso Mango which is considered as a superior variety of Mango and commonly called as King of Mangoes gets GI tag. Government has granted Geographical Indication(GI) to the Alphonso mangoes from regions of Ratnagitri, Sindhudurg and part of Maharashtra. GI helps to ensure the authenticity of the fruit from this region.
What is GI?
Geographical Indication is a name or sign used on certain products to indicate specific geographical location. GI tag ensures only registered ones can use the popular product name. Darjeeling Tea in 2004 became the first GI tagged product in India.
Alphonso known as "Hapus' in Maharashtra is in great demand not only in domestic market but also in International market.
“Such a name conveys an assurance of quality and distinctiveness which is essentially attributable to its origin in that defined geographical locality,” said commerce and industry ministry in a release on Friday.
