Union Minister of State for Fisheries, George Kurian, has called upon all stakeholders in the fisheries sector to actively register under the National Fisheries Development Programme (NFDP) to avail themselves of insurance coverage and multiple welfare benefits.

Addressing the Fisheries Outreach Programme held in Thrissur on October 25, 2025, Kurian said the key objective of NFDP is to ensure that government welfare and development schemes directly reach those involved in fishing and aquaculture.

Union Minister appreciated the Kerala Government for its full cooperation in implementing central schemes and highlighted the joint efforts that have led to the redevelopment of several fishing harbours. He further mentioned that low-interest loans are being extended to strengthen fisheries infrastructure across the state.

Kurian announced that nine integrated coastal villages in Kerala have been selected for development under the Central Government’s initiative. Each village will be equipped with processing centres, kiosks, and community facilities, supported by an allocation of Rs 2 crore. These projects, he said, aim to promote climate-resilient and technology-driven fisheries, with the State Government identifying the beneficiary villages.

Highlighting India’s achievements in the sector, the Minister noted, “India today ranks second globally in fish production and processing, a result of the hard work and dedication of our fishers and fish farmers.” He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening fish farmers’ cooperative societies and ensuring that they receive the benefits of welfare and development schemes.

Kurian concluded by urging collective efforts to realize the Prime Minister’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, emphasizing unity and dedication as the foundation of national progress.

During the outreach event, the Minister distributed Kisan Credit Cards (KCCs), NFDP registration certificates, and transponders, while engaging directly with fishers and farmers to understand their challenges.
