In its campaign against the adulteration of edible oils, the food regulator FSSAI reported on Wednesday that more than 27,500 liters of loose cooking oils were seized between August 1 and August 14.
Maximum quantities of the total amount of edible oils confiscated during the campaign came from Uttar Pradesh at 21,865 liters, followed by Rajasthan at 5,360 liters and Tamil Nadu at over 205 liters. Small amounts—75 liters and 25 liters, were recovered in Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh respectively. The FSSAI said that it had finished its nationwide campaign against trans-fatty acids, the sale of multi-source edible oils without adequate labeling, and adulteration in edible oils (single oil as a constituent). This extensive surveillance effort was conducted from August 1 through August 14. Over 35 States/UTs, 4,845 surveillance samples, including vanaspati, multi-source edible oils, and vegetable oils, were gathered. For quick analysis, the samples have been forwarded to accredited food testing labs. In the following few days, the results are anticipated. Any suspected occurrence of adulteration must be followed by an immediate regulatory sample draw in order to pursue legal action against the FBOs, according to the FSSAI.
To ensure that the sample base is diverse and inclusive of all FBOs/brands being sold there, the Commissioners of Food Safety in all States/UTs were instructed to remove surveillance samples of these goods from the markets in a staggered manner. In the campaign, food safety departments carried out intensive surveillance to track down the delinquent FBOs, who may be found selling adulterated edible oils or loose edible oils.
"Furthermore, as a specific focus of the campaign to monitor the sale of loose oil in the country, a huge quality of loose edible oils, i.e., over 27,500 liters have been seized across the country on the spot during the course of the inspection," FSSAI said.
