Rising floodwater has shattered Assam with the death toll mounting up to 15 till Wednesday. The farming sector in the state is in a pathetic condition as 90% of the sowing crops, particularly paddy are underwater.
According to reports, 30 out of 33 districts are affected by the flood and some places of these districts are crossing the danger level. The most severe flood situation has been detected in the Brahmaputra at Goalpara district which exceeds up to 36.27 meters as per reports.
Paddy fields turned into an endless pond of water in most of the villages of Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Goalpara, Golaghat and lower Assam districts with shattering dreams and labor of farmers and their family.
According to the reports, around 4.6 million people have been affected in the flood with severe damage to its paddy fields, crops, and wildlife as well.
More than 90% of Kaziranga National Park goes underwater, forcing animals to escape to the hills of Karbi Anglong district across the highway that runs along the southern edge of the park.
Rohini B. Saikia, KNP’s Divisional Forest Officer said “Smaller animals such as deer and wild boar usually suffer the most during floods, but two rhinos and an elephant drowned during the last 24 hours. Nine of the 30 animals that have died so far were hit by speeding vehicles while trying to cross the highway,”
“We have requested the Union Minister to expedite the setting up of the North East Water Management Authority, as recommended by the NITI Aayog. We have also sought inclusion of river erosion in the list of admissible natural calamities under the State Disaster Relief Fund,” Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said regarding the crisis.
