In an effort to increase profits and improve their financial returns, over 50 farmers in Telangana’s Nalgonda district have implemented a new cultivation strategy that combines mango and mosambi crops with banana. Traditionally, mango and mosambi crops can take anywhere from three to five years to yield any significant income for farmers. However, by incorporating tissue culture banana plants into their farms as an internal crop, farmers can expect to see profits within just six months. This method has been embraced by many farmers in the district, who have seen the benefits of this innovative cultivation strategy first-hand.
One of the pioneers of this method was a farmer-turned-fruit vendor named Godala Krishna. Krishna implemented this strategy on his five-acre mango farm and saw a substantial profit of Rs.1 lakh per acre from his efforts. This success inspired other farmers in the district to follow in his footsteps and adopt this innovative approach to agriculture.
Another farmer, Ramaswamy, has also embraced this cultivation strategy, growing the Chakkarakeli variety of banana as a standalone crop. Ramaswamy reports that after just six months of tissue culture plantation, the plants were continuously yielding a profitable crop, with a yield of 30 quintals per acre. This level of productivity has translated into a profit of Rs.2 lakh per acre for each general crop season, making this cultivation strategy a valuable one for farmers in the district.
The success of this innovative cultivation method has not gone unnoticed, and it has inspired other farmers in the district, such as those in Annareddygudem, Kanagal, and Cherlagowraram, to adopt this strategy for themselves. The officials from the Horticulture department have also taken note of this successful cultivation method and are encouraging other farmers to embrace this innovative approach to agriculture.
