
Mild vibrations were detected in Kolkata and Imphal on Friday, March 28, 2025, following a major 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand, including the capital Bangkok. The earthquake's epicenter was located in central Myanmar, approximately 50 kilometers east of Monywa. Residents in various parts of Kolkata and the surrounding areas reported feeling the tremors.
Preliminary reports confirm that there has been no damage to property or loss of life in Kolkata due to the tremors. However, people in the Thangal Bazar area panicked in Manipur. This area has many old multi-story buildings, but officials have confirmed that no damage has been reported so far.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his concern over the earthquake's impact on Myanmar and Thailand. He assured that India is ready to provide assistance to both nations.
"Concerned by the situation in the wake of the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, we have asked our authorities to be on standby and instructed the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand," PM Modi posted on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).
Earthquake in Meghalaya
In a separate incident, an earthquake of magnitude 4 struck the East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya on Friday. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 1:03 PM (IST) at a depth of 5 km.
No reports of damage or casualties have been received from the region. Authorities have urged residents in the affected areas to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines in case of aftershocks.
