Earthquake of 5.9 Magnitude Shakes Afghanistan; Tremors Felt in Delhi-NCR

On Thursday, tremors were felt in Delhi and surrounding areas following a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck parts of Afghanistan.

Around 7:55 p.m., an earthquake struck Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region. The epicentre was located 79 kilometres south of Fayzabad, Afghanistan, at a depth of 200 kilometres.

 

"An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter Scale struck 79 kilometres south of Fayzabad, Afghanistan, at 7:55 p.m. today," according to the National Centre for Seismology.

An earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale struck Delhi-NCR in the early hours of Sunday (New Year's Eve), according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

NCS is the Government of India's nodal agency for monitoring earthquake activity in the country.

 

The quake struck at 1:19 a.m. on Sunday, with its epicentre in Haryana's Jhajjar district.

On November 12, earthquake tremors were felt throughout the Delhi NCR. The magnitude of the November 12 earthquake in Nepal was 5.4 on the Richter scale, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), and it occurred at around 7:57 p.m. "The depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometres below ground," NCS stated.

 

Over 1,000 people lost their lives when an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 devasted eastern Afghanistan last year.
