Droupadi Murmu Becomes India's First Tribal President

Droupadi Murmu was announced as the 15th President of India, succeeding Ram Nath Kovind. She is the first Tribal leader and the second woman President of India.

The first tribal person and only other woman to be chosen as India's president, Droupadi Murmu made history on Thursday.

Murmu, NDA's candidate for the presidential election 2022, triumphed in the election by a comfortable majority of more than 63% votes against Yashwant Sinha.

Murmu is likely to take oath on 25th July with incumbent President Ram Nath Kovind's tenure ending on July 24.

Murmu, born on June 20, 1958, is an Odia native from the Parbeda village and Kusumi block in the Mayurbhanj district. She is a member of the Santhal tribe, including the famous freedom fighter Birsa Munda. Both her grandpa and father, Biranchi Narayan Tudu, were sarpanches in their village.

Speaking about Murmu becoming the president, a resident of Jajpur district, Bhubaneshwar, Prakash Naik said, "We are proud to see Murmu ji representing Orissa as the President of the country. We are sure that she will be an exemplary president."

MC Dominic, the President of the Agriculture Journalist Association of India (AJAI) said, "A self-made leader against all odds will be an inspiration for generations to come."

About Droupadi Murmu

Droupadi Murmu was a teacher until she joined the BJP and entered politics in 1997. She had two positions: junior assistant in the irrigation department of the Government of Odisha and assistant professor at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Institute in Rairangpur.

She is a two-term MLA who also served as a minister in the Naveen Patnaik administration from 2000 to 2004, holding a number of ministries including the departments of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry as well as the Ministry of Transport and Commerce.

Droupadi Murmu made history in 2015 when she was elected as the nation's first tribal woman governor. From May 18, 2015, Mumru presided as the governor of Jharkhand for six years.

Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs & Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Piyush Goyal in a tweet said, there is a wave of happiness all around to see Droupadi Murmu ji, a woman from the tribal society becoming the President of India.

Murmu has proven her ability as a leader by undertaking different departments for the government of Odisha, including commerce, fisheries, animal husbandry, and transport.

India will be expecting the same diligence and compassion from her as the President of India.
