Dr. Rajaram Tripathi, a leading figure of the Indian herbal industry and member of the National Medicinal Plants Board, was warmly received at a prestigious “Meet & Greet” event held in Moscow. The event was jointly organized by the Indian Business Alliance (IBA), the Indian National Cultural Centre ‘SITA’, and the ‘Krishi Jagran’ group.

The gathering brought together successful entrepreneurs, doctors, farmers, and experts from Russia’s industrial, trade, and agricultural sectors who emphasized the growing demand for Indian medicinal plants, spices, and superfoods in the Russian market.

A key focus of discussion was the surprising inclusion of around 70 vital Indian herbs and spices, Ashwagandha among them, on Russia’s so-called ‘Negative List’. It was noted that Ashwagandha extracts have virtually no market presence in Russia. Indian experts familiar with the issue indicated that this unofficial blacklist acts as a significant barrier to imports of Indian herbs and spices. Russian authorities reportedly cite a lack of sufficient scientific evidence and data on these products as the main reason behind the restrictions.

Addressing the issue, Dr. Tripathi stated:

“These restrictions are not merely causing commercial losses but also hindering medicinal and health collaboration between our two countries. I will raise this matter with the Government of India as a top priority and endeavor to remove these barriers through scientific data and research. This will benefit not only Indian farmers but also improve the health of Russian citizens.”

Dr. Tripathi also announced plans to revisit Russia soon to engage directly with farmers in both countries. He aims to facilitate the exchange of traditional and modern agricultural techniques to bring mutual benefits.

The success of the event was credited to the leadership of IBA President Sami Manoj Kotwani and M.C. Dominic, founder of ‘Krishi Jagran’.

With rising demand for Indian herbal and aromatic products in Russia, and considering the 25% tariff imposed by the USA on Indian exports, Russia is being seen as a vital alternative export market. All attendees underscored the importance of strengthening India-Russia trade and cultural ties in this sector.

Key Highlights:

  • Russia’s Negative List includes approximately 70 crucial Indian medicinal herbs, including Ashwagandha.

  • The restriction is attributed to insufficient scientific evidence recognized by Russian authorities.

  • Dr. Tripathi is committed to prioritizing this issue with the Indian Government and removing barriers using scientific proof.

  • Strong demand exists in Russia for Indian spices, superfoods, millets, and aromatic products.

  • Due to the US 25% tariff on Indian goods, Russia is emerging as a key alternative export destination.

Dr. Tripathi plans to promote exchange of traditional and modern farming practices between Indian and Russian farmers.

IBA President Manoj Kotwani concluded the event stating, “This program marks a significant opportunity to elevate India-Russia cooperation in agriculture, health, and trade. Dr. Tripathi’s mission will empower Indian herbal producers and foster greater Ayurveda and natural medicine exchange between the two nations.”

The event saw participation from prominent individuals including Manoj Kotwani, Larisa Matrasova, Dr. Rakesh Srivastava, Dr. Rajiv Verma, Dr. Benny Mathew, Dr. Atul Chakrapani, Andy Kotwani, Shubham, Rohit, Roni, along with numerous Indian and Russian entrepreneurs.

The Moscow “Meet & Greet” is widely regarded as a vital stride towards strengthening the global footprint of India’s herbal industry.
