Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Earth Sciences, and Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy, and Space, will officially open the National Genome Editing and Training Center (NGETC) and the International Conference on Food and Nutritional Security-2023 (iFANS-2023) at NABI, in Mohali on Friday.

The NGETC is a cutting-edge laboratory under one roof that will act as a national platform to meet regional demands for adapting various genome editing techniques, including CRISPR-Cas mediated genome alteration.

The current climatic situation makes it difficult to improve crops for improved nutrition and resistance to changing environmental conditions. Indian studies may be able to apply the promising technique of genome editing to provide the necessary custom features in crops.

Banana, rice, wheat, tomato, maize, and millet are just a few of the several crops that NABI has demonstrated its capacity to expand the use of genome editing technologies.

The National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI), the Centre for Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB), the National Institute of Plant Biotechnology (NIPB), and the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) will collaborate to organize the forthcoming Conference on Food and Nutritional Security (iFANS-2023) at NABI.

The conference aims to bring together young researchers and international specialists in the fields of genome editing, food and nutrition biotechnology, and agriculture. Given that food and nutrition security is a global issue, the conference's theme is relevant for motivating young researchers and students.

The use of sophisticated biotechnology tools, such as genome editing with CRISPR-Cas9, has the ability to accomplish these objectives sustainably. Over 500 attendees from throughout the nation have registered for this conference.

Throughout these four days, 80 speakers (40 foreign and 40 national) will also impart their scientific expertise.
