Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized the urgent need to address farmers' concerns and resolve their issues promptly, stating that the nation cannot afford to neglect their needs. Speaking as the Chief Guest at the inaugural event of the Amrut Mahotsav and Alumni Meet at the College of Agriculture, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, today, Dhankhar highlighted the vital role of the agriculture sector in the national economy.
He noted that agro-based industries, including those involved in textiles, food, and edible oils, are thriving and making profits, yet the benefits must also reach farmers. He advocated for these industries to contribute their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds to improve farmers' welfare and support agricultural research. According to Dhankhar, keeping farmers happy should be a priority, as their economic well-being directly impacts the broader economy.
The Vice President also stressed the importance of protecting farmers from unpredictable weather conditions and market fluctuations, which often lead to hardship. He urged for more strategies to shield farmers from such uncertainties and ensure their economic and mental health.
Dhankhar recommended the direct transfer of all types of subsidies to farmers, allowing them to make their own decisions about inputs like fertilizers. This, he suggested, could promote organic farming alternatives.

“The distress of farmers calls for urgent national attention. Farmers need economic security. In a nation that is rising as never before, with unstoppable progress, we cannot afford to put the concerns of farmers on the back burner. Time is of absolute essence in resolving their problems. The government is working, and we need a synergetic approach with a positive mindset to find solutions,” tweeted Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Praising the government's initiative to create a national turmeric board, he highlighted its potential to double turmeric production and improve exports, benefiting farmers. He encouraged the government to establish similar boards for other agricultural products, ensuring value additions and specialized support.
Additionally, Dhankhar stressed the need for technology adoption in agriculture, pointing out that while the sector is evolving rapidly, many farmers still rely on outdated equipment. He called for Krishi Vigyan Kendras to play a central role in facilitating technological integration and reaching out to farmers.
Dhankhar also underscored the need for continuous agricultural reforms to adapt to changing times, urging institutions like the Indian Council of Agricultural Research to remain farmer-centric and ensure that scientific advancements translate into tangible benefits for the farming community.
