The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying will celebrate “National Milk Day” to commemorate the birth centenary of Dr. Verghese Kurien (Milk Man of India) on 26th November 2021 at T K Patel Auditorium, National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) Campus, NDDB, Anand, Gujarat at 10:00 AM onward and till 2.00 PM. The event will be jointly organized by the Department with National Dairy Development Board & other institutions as well, which was created by Dr. Kurien.
‘Iconic Week’
The week-long celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav by the Department will culminate with the celebration of National Milk Day.
Distribution of National Gopal Ratna Awards
During the ceremony, Union Minister for Animal Husbandry & Dairying Parshottam Rupala will confer National Gopal Ratna Awards to the winners of the Best Dairy Farmer rearing indigenous cattle/buffalo breeds, Best Artificial Insemination Technician, and Best Dairy Cooperative Society (DCS)/ Milk Producer Company/ Dairy Farmer Producer Organization in the country.
Besides felicitation of the winners of the prestigious National Gopal Ratna Awards, Parshottam Rupala will also inaugurate/launch IVF Lab at Dhamrod, Gujarat and Hessergatta, Karnataka & Start-up Grand Challenge 2.0. Mos Dr. Murugan and Sanjeev banyan will also grace the occasions.
Why do we Celebrate National Milk Day?
The day celebrates the importance of milk in a person’s life. And to promote the benefits related to the milk & milk industry and to create awareness among people about the importance of milk and milk products. This year, India is celebrating the 100th birth anniversary of Dr. Kurien.
About Dr. Verghese Kurien (Milk Man of India)
Dr. Verghese Kurien was born on 26th November 1921, in Kozhikode (Kerala), and passed away on 9th September 2012 when he was 90 years old. He is known as the ‘Father of White Revolution in India’. A well-known Indian social entrepreneur, who is still famous for his ‘Operation Flood’, which is known as the world’s largest agricultural program.
He established 30 institutions that are run by various farmers and workers. Dr. Kurien also played a key role in the establishment and success of Amul Brand. Because of his efforts only, India became the largest producer of milk in 1998, surpassing the U.S.
