Delhi Weather: The sweltering heat in the national capital shows no signs of slowing down. With maximum temperatures reaching around 41-42°C and minimums staying as high as 30°C, Delhi continues to battle severe heatwave conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heat alert, urging residents to prepare for more hot days ahead.
According to IMD, heatwave conditions will continue in isolated areas of Delhi and NCR till May 23. The high temperature, combined with warm night conditions, is pushing the heat index even higher, making it extremely uncomfortable, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children.
However, some relief is expected soon. IMD has predicted partly cloudy skies and light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in the evening and night hours from May 21 to May 24. Wind speeds could touch 50 kmph during storm activity.
Here’s what to expect:
-
May 21: Dust storm and thundery activity in the evening, light rain likely. Max temperature around 40-42°C.
-
May 22-24: Slight dip in day temperatures (38-40°C), light showers and gusty winds expected in the evening/night hours.
-
Winds will blow predominantly from the southeast at speeds up to 20 kmph.
The IMD has issued a warning for residents to stay alert during thunderstorms. Residents are advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid sheltering under trees, and unplug electronic appliances.
As the heatwave continues, doctors and weather officials urge people to keep hydrated, wear light cotton clothes, and avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours. IMD also advises using ORS, lemon water, buttermilk, and other fluids to stay cool.
As the city awaits stronger pre-monsoon activity in the coming weeks, residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions.
