Delhi is reeling under a brutal heatwave, with temperatures expected to touch a sweltering 46°C on Thursday, June 12. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for the national capital, warning of serious health risks and urging residents to stay indoors, stay cool, and stay hydrated.
The city is likely to see clear skies and dusty winds throughout the day. Nighttime won’t bring much respite either, with the minimum temperature expected to remain around 35.6°C. On Wednesday, parts of Delhi already recorded temperatures in the 44–45°C range, nearly 4–5°C above normal. The minimum temperature stood at 30.7°C, which is 2.7°C above the seasonal average.
According to the IMD, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are expected to continue across Delhi-NCR till June 14. The department has highlighted the situation as especially dangerous for the elderly, children, and people with existing health conditions. Authorities have recommended avoiding outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours and wearing light, breathable cotton clothing.
In a slight shift, Delhi may see partly cloudy skies and light rain or thunderstorms by Thursday evening, with gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–60 kmph. Similar conditions may continue on Friday, offering temporary relief from the oppressive heat.
Health officials have advised the public to take standard precautions, such as using umbrellas or hats when outdoors, and drinking plenty of fluids like ORS, lemon water, and buttermilk to combat dehydration.
This spell of extreme heat is part of a larger weather pattern affecting Northwest India. Several neighbouring states, including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and parts of Uttar Pradesh, are also witnessing mercury levels breaching 45°C.
The IMD has forecast a slight dip in temperatures from June 14 onwards due to the influence of a Western Disturbance over the region. Until then, residents are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and follow heatwave advisories issued by the authorities.
