Delhi’s Air Quality Improves, GRAP Stage-III Restrictions Lifted Across NCR

Delhi's air quality saw remarkable improvement on January 5, 2025, with the average Air Quality Index (AQI) showing a continuous decline throughout the afternoon. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI at 2 PM was 348, improving to 343 by 3 PM, further reducing to 339 at 4 PM, and reaching 335 at 5 PM. This positive trend in air quality has prompted the Sub-Committee on the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in the National Capital Region (NCR) and adjoining areas to reassess the current situation.

After evaluating meteorological data and AQI forecasts provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), the Sub-Committee noted that the improvement was aided by favorable weather conditions and increased wind speeds. The AQI is now expected to remain in the "Poor" category in the coming days.

Considering these factors, the Sub-Committee has decided to revoke all Stage-III actions under the revised GRAP across the NCR with immediate effect. However, actions under Stages I and II of GRAP will continue to be enforced and monitored by the relevant agencies.

Despite the easing of restrictions under Stage-III, stringent measures will remain in place for construction and demolition sites, as well as industrial units that have been issued closure orders for violations of statutory guidelines. These entities will not be allowed to resume operations without explicit approval from the Commission.

Citizens are urged to follow the guidelines outlined in the Citizen Charter under Stages I and II of the revised GRAP to ensure that air quality does not deteriorate further. The Sub-Committee stressed the need for vigilance during winter, as poor weather can worsen pollution levels.

The CAQM Sub-Committee will closely monitor air quality and make timely decisions based on upcoming forecasts and weather conditions.
