Cyclonic Storm "KYARR" Intensifies in the Coastal Lines; Heavy Rainfall Alert Issued in Many States

“The Severe Cyclonic Storm "KYARR" over east-central Arabian Sea moved west-northwestwards with speed of 12 kmph during the past 06 hours, intensified into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm and lay centered at 0530 hrs IST of today about 270 km nearly to the west-southwest of Ratnagiri (Maharashtra), 360 km south-southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra) and 1780 km east-southeast of Salalah (Oman) which is very likely to further intensify into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 24 hours”, said the Indian Meteorological in its morning bulletin.

Heavy rain lashed over in coastal Karnataka and Malnad regions since the Thursday night and claimed five lives in the coastal region so far. Indian Meteorological Department has predicted extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm at isolated places over coastal districts of Karnataka, Goa and south Konkan and isolated heavy rainfall over north Konkan today. The administration has ordered to close school and colleges in the coastal districts so far.

“A trough runs from the cyclonic circulation over Odisha to central Assam across Gangetic West Bengal up to 2.1 km above mean sea level. Under the influence of the above systems, Heavy rainfall at isolated places also likely over major parts of Peninsular India during the next 48 hours and over parts of east and northeast India during next 24 hours”, said the weather department of India.

Moreover, three persons died on the spot in Chikkamagaluru district, and two sustained injuries when the car by which they were traveling fell off a bridge into an overflowing stream at Badavanadinne in Mudigere taluk.

As per yesterday’s report, most places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Konkan & Goa, and Coastal & South Interior Karnataka lashed with heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm.

Maximum temperatures were recorded above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at a few places over Lakshadweep; at isolated places over Kerala & Mahe and Tamilnadu, Karaikal & Puducherry while the minimum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at isolated places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura and Madhya Maharashtra; a
