The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a weather warning Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata on Thursday. The IMD forecasted moderate rain on September 30 and October 1, with severe thundershowers on October 2 and 3 in Delhi.
In the month of September, Delhi received considerably more than 230.9 mm of rain. The average rainfall in September is 112.9 mm. This month has witnessed up to 18 rainy days, compared to 3 rainy days in September 2020 and 6 rainy days in September 2019.
The national capital has received 744 mm of rain, compared to an average of 583.1 mm. This data reveals a 28 percent increase in rainfall.
Cyclone Shaheen Update
Cyclone Shaheen, which is likely to form over the Arabian Sea today is among two extremely intense weather systems developing over India’s eastern and western parts that bring extremely heavy rain in several parts of the country, IMD said.
IMD predicts heavy rain in Kolkata
Heavy rain is also expected in several areas of Purulia, Bankura, and West Bardhaman districts on Thursday. ‘Weather is expected to improve in most districts of south Bengal from Thursday,' said regional Met director GK Das.
The MeT department, however, has stated that there is no chance of severe rains in Kolkata on Thursday, but has already issued a yellow alert for heavy rains in two districts, including Burdwan, Purulia, Bankura, 24 Parganas, Howrah, and Hooghly.
These areas will be hit by a strong rush of wind with speeds ranging from 30 to 40 kilometres per hour, which can rise up to 50 kilometres per hour. Fishermen have been instructed not to go out into the sea over the next two to three days.
Mumbai Weather Forecast
The IMD predicts 'extremely heavy rains' in few areas of Marathwada, Mumbai, and other portions of Konkan in the next 24 hours.
According to KS Hosalikar, senior scientist at IMD Mumbai, "the remnants of the Gulab cyclone will continue to have an influence on Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra, and Konkan, with a few locations experiencing exceptionally heavy rainfall."
'There will be more rainfall in the northern Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra on Wednesday as well,' he added.
