The Very Severe Cyclonic storm " AMPHAN" over central parts of South Bay of Bengal moved northwards with a speed of 09 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centred at 1730 hrs IST of today, the 17th May, 2020 over central parts of South Bay of Bengal near latitude 12.0°N and longitude 86.0°E, about 930 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 1080 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 1200 km southsouthwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh). It is very likely to intensify further into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 24 hours. It is very likely to move nearly northwards slowly during next 12 hours and then recurve northnortheastwards and move fast across the northwest Bay of Bengal and cross West Bengal Bangladesh coast between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) during Afternoon/Evening of 20th May 2020 as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm, says the Indian Meteorological Department in the morning weather forecast.
Amphan Can Pose a Threat to the Many States
Hurricane Amphan in the Bay of Bengal can pose a threat to many states. According to the Meteorological Department, western disturbance is active in the country at this time which may result in a deteriorated weather conditions in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, as well as Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan and Western Uttar Pradesh.
Cyclonic Storm Amphan May Take a Dangerous Form in the Next 12 Hours
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, cyclonic storms from the southeastern Bay of Bengal and neighbouring areas may take a dangerous form in the next 12 hours. A cyclonic storm is expected to increase rapidly in the next 12 hours at a distance of about 1000 kilometres in the southeast Bay of Bengal. There have been warnings of storms in the coastal region and surrounding areas of Odisha.
NDRF deployed 17 teams in Odisha and West Bengal in view of the increasing threat of 'Amphan’
As per reports, NDRF has deployed 17 teams in Odisha and West Bengal in view of the increasing threat of 'Amphan'. NDRF Director General SN Pradhan said in a video message that the National Disaster Response Force 'is closely monitoring the situation from the headquarters and we are in touch with the state governments, India Meteorological Department and all agencies concerned'.
"Amphan is turning into a severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal and it is likely to become a very severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours," he said.
