According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several parts of north India including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are experiencing extreme cold wave conditions, while the rest of the nation is bracing for heavy rainfall beginning today.

The IMD also predicted that heavy rains will fall in Arunachal Pradesh and Gangetic West Bengal during the day.
Heavy rains are also expected in Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. East Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra's Vidarbha are likely to get isolated and scattered rainfall, respectively.
According to the IMD, rainfall will also fall across Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. The Met department predicts extensive rainfall in Telangana while scattered downpours are expected in Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. The IMD predicts widespread rainfall in Andhra Pradesh.
Although the majority of the north Indian states and Gujarat in the west of the nation would remain dry, the Met department has predicted light to moderate rainfall over and in the surrounding areas of Kurukshetra in Haryana, Muzaffarnagar and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh during the next hour on Wednesday (January 12).
The IMD issued an orange alert in Odisha on Tuesday, which is still in effect today.
A yellow alert has been issued across Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand till January 13. Notably, an orange alert indicates "extremely bad weather," while yellow alert indicates "severely bad weather" that has been present for several days.
RK Jenamani, an IMD scientist stated on Tuesday that the lowest temperature in Delhi has begun to fall again and might reach six degrees Celsius by Saturday. He added that new snowfall in the mountains will trigger a drop in the national capital's lowest temperature though cold wave conditions are "unlikely this week."
According to the IMD report, Delhi recorded a temperature of 8.6 degrees Celsius this morning up from 6.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. On Tuesday, maximum temperatures were "significantly below average (-5.0 degrees or less)" in most parts of west Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha, a few parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, east Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi and a few parts of Odisha.
Cold wave conditions are expected in northeast Rajasthan between January 12 -14 as well as in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on January 13 - 14. Meanwhile, dense to extremely dense fog is expected during the next four to five days across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. Similar fog predictions have been made for north Rajasthan and north Madhya Pradesh for January 12 and 13.
