On March 2, 2024, the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan engaged in an active exchange with farmers at the Camelot Convention Center in Alappuzha, Kerala. The program saw over 2000 farmers participating in discussions centered on the development of agriculture in the state.
During the event, CM Vijayan alongside Agriculture Minister of Kerala, P Prasad and Animal Husbandry & Dairy Development Minister Chinchu Rani, interacted with the farmers. The session allowed more than 50 farmers to voice their concerns directly to the ministers, fostering a sense of community engagement and participatory democracy.
Moreover, the day included acknowledgment of successful farmers. One such was Mr Roymon K.A who also received the ‘Millionaire Farmer of India Award’ hosted by Krishi Jagran earlier. He shared his experiences, emphasizing the importance of sustainable farming practices in the nation.
As part of the event, Dr. Madhura Swaminathan, Professor and Head of Economic Analysis Unit, Indian Statistical Institute Bangalore Centre expressed her satisfaction with the approach of reaching out to farmers directly. She stated that it exemplifies participatory democracy and grassroots’ engagement.
The government's commitment to agricultural development was evident through the announcement of various schemes and initiatives during the event. Notably, 19 agriculture schemes were formulated in the previous fiscal year, with 18 already completed in the state as of now. Other discussions revolved around schemes aimed at promoting smooth paddy farming and mitigating the impact of calamities like pig attacks.
In line with modern agricultural practices, the government revealed plans to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into the agricultural sector. Additionally, initiatives such as promoting honey farming and integrating coffee farming with rubber and other trees underlined a commitment to sustainability and diversification.
Efforts to support farmers, including providing easy access to loans and establishing farmer-producer companies were emphasized. With this, the government's decision to develop Agro Service Centers and brand high-quality agricultural products under the Kerala Agro label showcased a holistic approach to supporting farmers and boosting agricultural productivity.
Such initiatives not only address immediate concerns but also lay the foundation for a resilient and prosperous agricultural sector.
