Chennai and several districts in Tamil Nadu are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next few days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The forecast, issued on April 15, highlights the impact of various weather systems affecting South India, including a cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and the southwest Bay of Bengal near Tamil Nadu.
The IMD has predicted that isolated to scattered rainfall will continue over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal till at least April 20. Thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph are expected, raising the possibility of brief but intense weather events, particularly in the evenings. Areas including Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and other nearby districts are advised to remain alert.
On April 14, parts of Tamil Nadu, including Erode and The Nilgiris, recorded rainfall amounts ranging from 5 to 6 cm, while gusty winds in Tiruttani reached speeds of up to 47 km/h. These conditions may persist due to upper-air cyclonic circulations in the region.
In addition to the rainfall, hot and humid conditions are predicted during the day, with temperatures expected to range between 35°C and 39°C across many parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai. The IMD has urged residents, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children, to stay hydrated and avoid exposure to the intense afternoon heat.
Currently, no major disruptions are anticipated, but citizens are advised to check daily forecasts and adhere to local advisories. Commuters should be aware of the potential for waterlogging in low-lying areas during heavy showers. The IMD will continue to monitor the evolving weather patterns and provide updates as necessary.
