Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on October 16, 2025, chaired a high-level review meeting aimed at transforming the country’s network of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) into stronger, more efficient institutions dedicated to farmer welfare.

Speaking at Krishi Bhavan, Chouhan emphasised that while India currently has 731 KVKs, the focus must now shift from mere expansion to empowerment and efficiency. “These centres are our frontline warriors in taking agricultural technology to small farmers,” he said.

The minister outlined an ambitious roadmap for KVKs, positioning them as key implementers of government schemes and farmer-centric programmes. He directed officials to ensure these institutions become hubs for promoting integrated farming practices and natural agriculture through innovative model projects.

A significant portion of discussions centred on improving working conditions for KVK staff. Chouhan instructed the Indian Council of Agricultural Research to guarantee adequate funding, manpower, and technical resources for smooth operations. He emphasised ensuring timely promotions and academic recognition for scientists based on their qualifications.

The minister also addressed long-pending concerns regarding salaries, allowances, retirement benefits, and career advancement opportunities for KVK personnel. Officials were directed to coordinate with state governments, NITI Aayog, and the Finance Ministry to find comprehensive solutions.

Chouhan mandated standardisation across all KVKs in training delivery, research extension activities, and fostering agricultural entrepreneurship. "Every KVK must function uniformly to ensure consistent service quality nationwide," he stated.

The minister repeatedly emphasised that strengthening KVKs isn't just administrative reform but essential for reaching millions of small farmers who form the backbone of Indian agriculture. "Our goal is ensuring that cutting-edge agricultural knowledge reaches every farmer's doorstep," Chouhan added.

The meeting included Agriculture Secretary Dr Devesh Chaturvedi and ICAR Director General Dr ML Jat, alongside other senior officials who will now implement the minister's directives.
