The Centre has pledged its complete support to the Manipur government in ensuring an ample stock of foodgrains across the state and guaranteeing regular supply to beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
In light of recent law and order challenges in Manipur, Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary of the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), visited Imphal today to assess the functioning of the NFSA.
During his visit, Secretary Sanjeev Chopra held discussions with L. Susindro Meitei, the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution of Manipur, as well as Chief Secretary Sh. Vineet Joshi. The DFPD Secretary assured the state government of additional assistance by allocating an extra 30,000 metric tonnes of rice for a period of three months, from June to August 2023, specifically intended for non-NFSA beneficiaries in Manipur.
As of now, the current stock position at nine depots stands at 30,600 metric tonnes, which is considered sufficient to meet the monthly allocation requirements of 12,000 metric tonnes under the NFSA and 6,500 metric tonnes under the non-NFSA category.
Furthermore, the DFPD is actively exploring alternative routes to ensure smooth and uninterrupted foodgrain supply to Manipur. Efforts are being made to establish supply channels from Dimapur, Silchar, and Bairabi to the state. By the end of June 2023, a total of 25,500 metric tonnes of rice is expected to be dispatched to Manipur through these additional routes.
This estimated stock position will adequately meet the state's foodgrain requirements in the coming month. The Department is committed to maintaining a steady inflow of stocks to prevent any scarcity of foodgrains in any part of Manipur.
The Centre's proactive measures demonstrate its dedication to supporting the Manipur government in securing the well-being of its citizens during these challenging times. By ensuring an adequate supply of foodgrains and exploring new routes for distribution, the government aims to alleviate concerns regarding food scarcity and maintain stability in the state.
