Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved the procurement of Moong and Urad in Madhya Pradesh and Urad in Uttar Pradesh under the central government’s Price Support Scheme (PSS). The decision came during a meeting held in New Delhi on June 24, 2025, where procurement logistics were also reviewed with senior officials and state agriculture ministers.
The approval follows a proposal from the Madhya Pradesh government requesting procurement of summer pulses. After thorough deliberation, the Centre gave the green light to procure both Moong and Urad in the state. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh has received approval for Urad procurement under the same scheme.
While acknowledging that the procurement move will put a significant financial burden on the central government, Minister Chouhan said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government remains firmly committed to protecting farmers’ interests. He stressed that the benefit of the scheme must reach farmers directly by avoiding middlemen, and highlighted the importance of efficient and transparent procurement.
Union Minister instructed NAFED, NCCF, and state agencies to ensure proper registration of farmers using the latest technologies and to increase the number of procurement centres if required. He called for fairness throughout the process and warned against any irregularities.
Raising concerns over reported issues in storage and warehousing, Chouhan urged state officials to act swiftly and take concrete measures to fix them. He assured Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi that the central government will provide full support in the interest of farmers.
The meeting was attended by Madhya Pradesh Agriculture Minister Aidal Singh Kansana, Union Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi, and other senior officials. The move is expected to offer price stability to farmers at a time when market fluctuations have been impacting pulse growers across key states.
