The Cabinet's Appointments Committee has approved Subrahmanyam's appointment for a period of two years beginning on the day of taking over the post's responsibilities. He takes over for Parameswaran Iyer, who was named World Bank Executive Director.
"The Cabinet Appointments Committee has approved the appointment of BVR Subrahmanyam, IAS (Retd.) as Chief Executive Officer, NITI Aayog, vice Parameswaran Iyer, upon his appointment as Executive Director, World Bank Headquarters, Washington DC, USA, for two years from the date of assumption of charge of the post or until further orders," the government said in a statement.
About BVR Subrahmanyam:
Subrahmanyam is an Andhra Pradesh native, holds an engineering degree and a 1987-batch IAS officers of Chhattisgarh cadre. The officer was appointed Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Secretary in 2018. In addition, he holds a management degree from London Business School.
Between 2004 and 2008, the 56-year-old officer served as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's private secretary. He returned to the prime minister's office (PMO) in 2012 after working for the World Bank. Subrahmanyam remained in the PMO until 2015, when he returned to Chhattisgarh, where he was first a principal secretary and then an Additional Chief Secretary (Home).
The officer was appointed Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir in 2018. During his presidency, the state's special status was revoked, and it was divided into two union territories. According to the sources, Subrahmanyam was among a small group of officers who were aware of the Centre's decision on Jammu and Kashmir before it was made public. He later became the Ministry of Commerce and Industry's Commerce Secretary.
