Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, emphasized the need to reduce input costs in farming to make agriculture more profitable, even as India maintains self-reliance in wheat and rice production. He made these remarks while inaugurating the 64th All India Wheat and Barley Research Workers’ Workshop on August 27, 2025, at Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Agricultural University in Gwalior.

Paying homage to renowned agricultural scientist Dr. M.S. Swaminathan in his centenary year, Chouhan credited the late visionary's contributions and the tireless efforts of Indian farmers for transforming the country into a global agricultural force.

Highlighting a significant growth in wheat production over the past decade, the Minister noted an increase from 86.5 million tonnes to 117.5 million tonnes, marking a 44% rise. However, he stressed that enhancing per-hectare productivity to match international standards remains a priority.

While the nation’s output of wheat and rice is sufficient, Chouhan drew attention to the growing need for boosting the production of pulses and oilseeds to cut down import reliance. He also called for greater promotion of traditional grains such as barley, citing their nutritional and medicinal value.

Addressing agricultural scientists, the Minister urged them to develop bio-fortified wheat varieties and tackle the adverse effects of unbalanced fertiliser use on soil health. He also emphasized the importance of sustainable practices like stubble management and the adoption of advanced technologies by farmers.

To safeguard farmers' interests, Chouhan mentioned strict government actions against companies selling substandard or counterfeit agrochemicals. He confirmed that licenses of such companies are being revoked and legal steps are being taken.

He further advocated for integrated farming systems, particularly for small and marginal farmers, promoting a combination of crop cultivation with animal husbandry, fisheries, beekeeping, and horticulture to improve income and resilience.

Chouhan urged citizens to support indigenous products and contribute to the national economy. Concluding his address, he reaffirmed that the conference is a critical platform for generating practical solutions and that agricultural research must effectively reach the fields, turning the 'Lab to Land' mission into reality.
