Professor Sudhir Kumar Jain, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
A letter regarding appointment was sent to the BHU by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education. Prof Sudhir Kumar Jain will be succeeding Prof Vijay Shukla as the VC of the BHU.
Prof Jain is a Padma Shri Awardee and is all set to hold the office as VC of BHU for a period of 3 years. The date on which Prof Jain will be assuming the charge of his office will be announced soon.
About Prof Sudhir Kumar Jain:
Prof Jain completed his BE from University of Roorkee in 1979 and then his MS and Ph.D from California Institute of Technology, Pasasena in 1980 and 1983, respectively.
A professor of civil engineering, he had worked with IIT Kanpur in different capacities between 1995 and 2008, before assuming the charge of director at IIT Gandhinagar in 2009.
He developed the National Information Centre of Earthquake Engineering at IIT Kanpur with the objective of dissemination of Information and literature and capacity building against earthquake disasters.
Prof Jain also conceived, developed and operated the national programme on earthquake engineering education with the Union ministry of Human Resource Development with the objective of developing earthquake engineering in colleges of engineering, architecture and polytechnics in the country.
