The world is passing through several major crises today, the main being the Agrarian crisis. Large tracts of land are losing fertility due to misuse or over-use. Experts expect a 40% loss of agricultural land in the next 50-60 years, by which time there will be about 30% increase in the world population. Strategies needed to be devised that could reduce greenhouse gas emissions and we need to concentrate more on different agro ecological practices and strategies to mitigate climate change .
One of the most sustainable approaches to mitigate global warming and climate change is to increase the planting of diverse landscapes. There are umpteen number of organizations working towards various sustainable approaches. There are various organizations that currently establish tree parks and oxygen parks. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has designed an ‘oxygen park’ within its premises at Coimbatore with Beema Bamboo species.
Beema Bamboo is the best ‘carbon sink’ to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions and one of the fastest-growing plants, growing one-and-a-half feet per day under the tropical conditions. Beema or Bheema Bamboo may be a superior clone, selected from Bambusa balcooa, a better biomass yielding bamboo species. This bamboo clone has been developed by the traditional breeding method. A fully-grown bamboo tree may generate over 300 kilograms of oxygen annually and it may be sufficient for one person for one year.
Beema Bamboo, developed by Dr N Bharathi of Growmore Biotech Ltd, the agri-technology company based at Hosur, Tamil Nadu, is an excellent choice for making the earth greener and mitigating climate change. Beena Bamboo is sterile and grows fast and doesn't die for several years, consistent with its developers. So it can be able to establish permanent green cover. After harvest it grows again. The
Bamboo plants are developed form tissue culture, free from pests and disease and are superior and can grow in the field for more than hundred years without any replanting. It is said that if managed by following the silvicultural methods, irrigation practices and fertilizer package as prescribed by Growmore Biotech Ltd, it's going to yield higher biomass. The TNAU has developed its oxygen park at Coimbatore with these plants.
Beema Bamboo with all these advantages would have huge benefits in terms of absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide, the main driver of global warming and climate change.
