Bakrid, also known as Eid al-Adha or the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important Islamic festivals celebrated across India and the world. It is observed with religious devotion, feasts, and the symbolic act of animal sacrifice, commemorating the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. In 2025, Bakrid will be celebrated on different days in various parts of India, leading to state-specific public and bank holidays.

This year, Bakrid falls on June 6 and June 7, depending on the lunar sighting and regional customs. Consequently, banks in several Indian states will remain closed either on June 6 (Friday), June 7 (Saturday), or both. Here is a comprehensive overview of the bank holiday schedule for Bakrid 2025.

Bank Holiday on June 6, 2025 (Friday)

On Friday, June 6, 2025, the festival of Bakrid will be officially observed in the state of Kerala. Banks in Kerala will remain closed on this day as per the state government’s holiday notification. Kerala often follows its own calendar for religious observances, and many Islamic holidays are celebrated a day earlier than in the rest of the country due to regional moon sightings.

If you are located in Kerala or planning any banking-related activities in the state, it is advisable to complete your work by June 5, as all physical bank branches will remain shut on June 6.

Bank Holiday on June 7, 2025 (Saturday)

June 8, 2025 (Sunday): Regular Weekly Holiday

June 8, 2025, falls on a Sunday, which is a regular weekly holiday for all banks across the country. This means that for people in states where Bakrid is observed on June 7, there will be a continuous two-day bank closure from Saturday through Sunday.

Why the Holiday Varies by State

India’s diverse cultural and religious landscape leads to varying holiday dates across different states. The date of Bakrid is determined based on the Islamic lunar calendar, and since moon sighting can differ between regions, the festival may be celebrated on different days. States like Kerala, where moon sightings are reported earlier, may observe Bakrid a day before the rest of the country.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) releases a yearly calendar of bank holidays based on three categories: Negotiable Instruments Act, Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) holidays, and bank account closing days. Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act vary from state to state depending on the local festivals, which include Bakrid.

Services That Remain Available During Bank Holidays

Even though banks remain closed physically, customers can still access essential banking services through:

  • Internet banking

  • Mobile banking apps

  • Automated Teller Machines (ATMs)

  • Phone banking

These digital services remain active around the clock and allow users to complete transactions such as fund transfers, balance inquiries, and bill payments without needing to visit a branch.

Important Advisory for Customers

If you have any critical banking work such as cheque clearance, branch-specific fund transfers, or document submissions, it is best to complete these tasks before June 6. Given the back-to-back holiday schedule in many states, some services may be delayed until regular operations resume on Monday, June 9.

Individuals and businesses that depend on regular banking should make advance arrangements to avoid inconvenience. Institutions that process salaries, invoices, or business transactions should also factor in the holiday schedule while planning payments.
