Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), launched by the Government of India in 2018, aims to provide financial protection in healthcare for economically vulnerable families. Each eligible family receives health coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per year for secondary and tertiary medical treatments, significantly reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses. The Ayushman Card serves as an identification tool, granting beneficiaries access to a vast network of empanelled hospitals across the country.

Importance of the Ayushman Card

The Ayushman Card is essential for beneficiaries to access cashless medical treatments under the AB-PMJAY scheme. It includes important details such as the beneficiary's name, family information, and a unique identification number. While linking the card to an Aadhaar number is optional, it is recommended to simplify the verification process at healthcare facilities. Having this card ensures that families, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, can obtain necessary medical services without financial burden.

Why Regularly Check Your Ayushman Card Status and Beneficiary List?

Regular verification of your Ayushman Card status and inclusion in the beneficiary list is crucial to ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare services. Routine checks help confirm your eligibility and the active status of your card, preventing potential disruptions during medical emergencies. Additionally, it allows for the prompt identification and rectification of any inaccuracies in personal or family information, ensuring efficient service delivery.

Ayushman Bharat Yojana Eligibility Criteria

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) provides health coverage to economically vulnerable families based on SECC 2011 data. In rural areas, eligibility includes families with one-room kutcha houses, no adult members between 16–59 years, female-headed households, disabled members without support, SC/ST families, and landless laborers. In urban areas, workers like ragpickers, domestic workers, street vendors, sanitation workers, and daily wage earners are eligible. As of 2025, all senior citizens aged 70 and above are also covered regardless of income.

  • Offline Method: Visit the nearest Common Service Centre (CSC) or an empanelled hospital with identification documents like Aadhaar card or ration card. The staff can assist in verifying your status and inclusion in the beneficiary list.

Benefits of Regularly Checking Ayushman Card Status

Regular checks ensure continuous healthcare coverage, minimize inconvenience during medical visits, and allow for the swift resolution of any discrepancies. This proactive approach guarantees beneficiaries full utilization of their healthcare rights under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme, safeguarding them from financial distress during health emergencies.

Recent Developments in the Ayushman Bharat Scheme

The government has been actively working to expand the reach of the Ayushman Bharat scheme. By January 2024, the scheme achieved a significant milestone with the creation of 30 crore (300 million) Ayushman cards. Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 4.83 crore cards, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 3.78 crore, and Maharashtra with 2.39 crore.

In October 2024, the scheme was expanded to include senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their income. Within ten days of this extension, over 4 lakh (400,000) elderly individuals registered, with the highest numbers from Madhya Pradesh and Kerala.
