Ayurveda Day 2025: Government has announced that Ayurveda Day will now be celebrated annually on September 23, starting in 2025. Previously, the day was associated with Dhanvantari Jayanti. This decision, formalized through a Gazette Notification in March 2025, marks a historic shift by establishing a fixed date for Ayurveda on the global calendar. This change aims to encourage broader participation both in India and internationally.
The theme for Ayurveda Day 2025 is ‘Ayurveda for People & Planet,’ highlighting Ayurveda’s holistic approach to personal wellbeing and environmental harmony.
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav, described Ayurveda as more than a healthcare system, calling it a life science deeply rooted in nature’s balance. “By designating 23 September as Ayurveda Day, India has provided Ayurveda a global calendar identity. The 2025 theme reflects our collective resolve to harness its full potential for human health and a healthier planet,” he said.
Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, highlighted the global growth of Ayurveda Day since its inception in 2016. According to him, Ayurveda has emerged as a widely practiced system of treatment across both rural and urban India, a fact reinforced by the first all-India NSSO survey. The 2025 celebrations aim to further strengthen Ayurveda’s role in promoting holistic health, ecological balance, and preventive care.
Ayurveda Day, celebrated last year, marked a significant milestone in India's healthcare landscape. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase II of the All India Institute of Ayurveda in New Delhi, launched four Centres of Excellence in Ayurveda, and introduced the nationwide “Desh Ka Prakriti Parikshan Abhiyan” campaign, along with other health initiatives valued at approximately Rs 12,850 crore.
Building on this momentum, the upcoming observance in 2025 is envisioned as more than just a ceremonial event. It aims to position Ayurveda as a viable solution to modern challenges, such as lifestyle disorders, stress, and illnesses linked to climate change.
Ministry of Ayush plans a wide array of activities for Ayurveda Day 2025, including awareness campaigns, youth engagement programmes, wellness consultations, and international collaborations. In 2024, events were organised in nearly 150 countries.
